I’ve tried to write this post several times but it seems like whatever I write will not do my grandfather’s life justice. My grandfather passed away the Sunday before last after suffering two strokes. He had his first stroke Friday morning at home and the second stroke as everyone started gathering at the hospital Friday afternoon. I am thankful that our entire family was able to say goodbye to him and to be there for my grandmother.
My grandfather fought in World War II. He worked and took care of his siblings. He worked for the telephone company for 38 years and was heavily involved in politics. He was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in. He had been married to my grandmother for 50 years.
When the preacher met with our family to talk about the funeral, he asked me if I had any special memories of my grandfather. I could not respond because I was upset. But really I have so many special memories of him that it would be hard to pick just one. My favorite part of every summer was going to visit my grandparents. I would love to go in his garden with him and pick vegetables. He and my grandmother would sit out on their back patio and watch us place basketball in the evenings. He was there for everything important event in my life. The only thing he missed was my college graduation, because of his health, and I was sad that he wasn’t there. He would always tell me how proud he was of me. Our family has been through a lot throughout the years and he was always there to help my mom whenever she needed it.
I am sad that he is gone but thankful that he got to be a part of my life for 27 years. They say that there is a special place in heaven for grandparents and I hope that is true.
