Wooo… 2nd week of food service rotation down, 5 to go!
I spent the first week of my rotation just getting into a routine and didn’t crack open my notebook of assignments until the second week. I did the same thing with my inpatient clinicals. I think it adds a lot of stress to a rotation to go into it obsessing over every.single.competency. you have to meet before you even know exactly what you’re going to be doing.
My FSSM rotation is a little different because I’m doing it where I’ve worked for the past 2 years. I think this has a lot of benefits and few shortcomings but really, I’ve been a school nutritionist for 5 years already. I have gotten more out of my career in the past 5 years than an intern would normally get out of a rotation. So although I really won’t have to opportunity to work on a lot of ‘new’ things, the rotation is still serving its purpose. I’m also not doing my regular job duties since I only have to complete 7 weeks of this rotation. So my time has been split between internship assignments, special projects for my boss and taking care of emergencies that come up.
School food service is always busy but there are 2 times of the year when things get especially crazy: back-to-school time and school closing time. I’m lucky enough to be around for back-to-school. This is how my internship is basically going to go:
Week 1: Getting ready for staff coming back
Week 2: Manager’s come back / training
Week 3: Staff comes back / training / convocation
Week 4: First week of school = craziness
After that, I will only have 3 weeks left. So the time will fly by!
The hardest part of this rotation is going to be getting all of my internship assignments completed. My priority this weekend is to actually make a calendar for the next 5 weeks and pick specific days when I will work on completing certain things.
I am reaching the halfway point of my internship. Since I received 6 weeks of Prior Assessed Learning credit for my internship, I only have to complete 25 weeks. I have finished 11. Woop woop!
