Lily finally had her surgery on Thursday and she’s recovering pretty well so far
I woke up earlier than normal Thursday morning to give her a lot of extra cuddles. I was so upset at the thought of her going through all of this and not understanding why she was in pain. We snapped a few selfies before we left…
The vet said her surgery went well and her knee looked pretty bad inside. She has had a luxating patella almost her whole life so he said that affects the cartilage in the knee.
I picked her up after I left my internship. I was scared to even see her because I didn’t want to see her in pain. They put in some nerve blocks and she was out of it from the anesthesia but he said she looked pretty good for just having surgery.
Thursday night was rough. Lily spent a lot of time just sitting up looking around. The only time she would lay down and sleep is when we laid on the blanket with her and rubbed her the whole time. She slept in a crate in our bedroom that night. K and I woke up several times to check on her and she was still sitting up looking at the wall throughout the night. It broke my heart :( I got up around 4:30 to try to get her to go potty and give her some pain meds.
She spent all day Friday at the vets so they could keep an eye on her while we were working. They removed her bandage and she finally peed outside. We had tried to get her a comfy e-collar but they said it was too short, so they ended up having to put a longer one on her. She was already putting some weight on her leg, which the vet said was really good for the day after surgery.
He showed me some physical therapy exercises to do on her several times each day. I will be honest… I was cringing the whole time. She has exposed staples now and that was freaking me out by itself. Her leg is pretty swollen and you can tell she’s in pain, so I don’t feel comfortable moving her leg and knee all around! But he stressed that it is really important to do these exercises if we want her to have a smooth recovery. I think the vet could tell I was a little nervous about all of this because he helped me walk her to my car to show me how she should be walking on the leash. He was super nice and I’m grateful everything has gone well so far.
We are resting at home today. I don’t think Lily slept too much throughout the night but she has slept a little bit here and there throughout the day today. She gets her staples out in 2 weeks and I think she will be a lot more comfortable then… no staples and no e-collar :)
