So I’m kind of excited because I got my hair cut and colored yesterday.
My stylist re-did my layers so they weren’t so heavy at the bottom (a must for when I wear it curly) and she used the bayalage technique to make the color a bit lighter at the ends. I mainly wanted something natural looking and low maintenance.
I don’t think you can really tell how the layers are different from my old hair cut because of the way it’s styled in these pics, but they feel so much better to me now! I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
Annnnnd while we’re on the topic of hair, I wanted to share my favorite hair treatment with you.
I’ve been using coconut oil monthly as a hair treatment for several years. My hair is dry and dull, and my scalp (and skin in general) get verrrrry dry and itchy when the weather gets cold. Coconut oil has helped both of these issues, alleviating the itchiness in my scalp and leaving my hair soft and shiny. As a bonus, it’s cheap and I usually have it in my kitchen cabinet anyway!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- An old t-shirt and towel
- 1/8 C (short hair) or 1/4 C (long hair) coconut oil
- Microwaveable glass/cup
- Spoon
- Hair restraint
Instructions:
- Coconut oil can be messy and will probably drip, so clear your work space before you begin.
- Measure coconut oil into your cup. Heat up for ~25 seconds or until coconut oil turns from solid to liquid.
- (Skip this step if your scalp isn’t dry) Begin by using a spoon to pour the coconut oil onto your scalp, one spoonful at a time. Stop each time to massage the oil into your scalp. Do this to your entire head.
- Next, hold a section of hair and use the spoon to pour oil down this section. Massage the oil into the strands of hair, paying special attention to the ends. You want the hair to be saturated but not dripping wet, if that makes sense. Note: you do NOT want to pour the oil directly from the cup onto your hair. Too much oil will drip everywhere when you’re done.
- Once you have covered your entire head of hair in oil, secure it at the top of your head so that it’s out of the way.
- Let treatment sit at least 2 hours before washing out. I prefer to sleep with it in my hair overnight (I just lay an old towel over my pillow)
- Wash your hair 2x, making sure to vigorously rub every part of your hair!
- Condition and style as usual
If you’re trying this for the first time, I recommend you do it when you have time to take a bit of a longer shower than normal. It’s important to shampoo your hair REALLY WELL at least twice or else it will still look oily when it dries.
If your dress is simple, take the opportunity
to make your look really pop with something more bold and
colorful. The last thing you would want is to trip and fall over your too-long-a gown in your own daughter’s wedding.
