Hello there and Happy Friday. I just realized that today is Friday the 13th, so be careful out there today!
After all of the anticipation leading up to my knee surgery, itβs hard to believe 1 week has passed since my procedure! Things are coming along pretty well so far. If you want the abbreviated version, this is basically how I have spent the past week:
Hereβs a day-by-day recap of how things have been going so far.
Friday: I had my surgery last Friday and got home sometime in the early afternoon, and I started taking narcotic pain medication ever 6 hours. My knee was wrapped in an ace bandage from my surgery and I kept ice packs on it around the clock. This was my view for 24 hoursβ¦
In case youβre wondering, it takes 10lb of ice to keep your knee iced for 24 hoursβ¦ thank you, Harris Teeter!
I was able to bear weight on my knee after the procedure and as instructed, walked to and from the restroom, but generally just slept and kept my leg iced and elevated for that first full day.
Saturday: this was the day when the real action started. I was supposed to remove my bandage 24 hours post-op and you may remember that this was one of the things I was *not* looking forward to. Something about peeling gauze away from an open wound seriously just grosses me out. Thank the Lord that my mom is a nurse and she did it for me, and it ended up not being a very big deal.
My incisions from my scope looked very clean and small. I thought my knee looked really good and not as swollen as I expected.
I took a shower, which was really unpleasant, and mostly rested and iced my knee for that day. I also put band-aids over my scope incisions.
Sunday: my instructions this day were to begin to try to βresume normal activities as toleratedβ. This of course meant going to Baskin Robbins.
In all seriousness, I mostly just continued to rest a lot and walked around my apartment a little more than I had been. I played it safe when we went to BR and used crutches.
I definitely noticed an increase in my swelling, especially at the top of my kneecap in my thigh area.
Monday: I was pretty much going stir-crazy at this point and was dying to feel like a normal person, so we decided to grab some lunch at Hawthorneβs pizza. So I might have worn pajama pants and used crutches for this outing, but whatever.
Monday was also when my the soreness in my knee really started to bother me. Iβm not sure if it was because I was gradually increasing my activities or that I was also trying to decrease my pain meds (or maybe a combo of both), but I would say Monday night was probably my worst night thus far.
Tuesday-Thursday: My instructions throughout the week have been to continue to increase my daily activities but to rest and elevate/ice my knee as soon as it starts to hurt. This pretty much has only allowed for me to walk around my apartment for 10-15 minutes at a time. I probably have iced my knee on average 7-10x throughout the day.
My more intense knee pain continued into Tuesday and Wednesday. I felt like I was walking a very fine line between βincreasing activities as toleratedβ and overdoing it. I didnβt even take a shower on Wednesday because I was so uncomfortable. I think thereβs a permanent imprint of my body on the couch.
Sometime toward the end of this week, Iβve felt like I may have turned a corner pain-wise. I comfortably got a good nightβs sleep on Wednesday night. It has been 2 days since Iβve needed any narcotic pain meds and Iβm up and about moving around my apartment now. Yesterday was also the first day I didnβt have to cover up my incisions and I think they are starting to heal nicely. It looks like they may not even leave scars. My knee is still pretty swollen- you canβt see the definition in my kneecap. Iβm hoping that will improve in the next week or so.
Knee Exercises: I have a packet of knee exercises Iβm supposed to be doing, most of which Iβm familiar with from when I did physical therapy back in the fall. So far Iβm tolerating about 1/3 of them (mostly the stretching and leg-lift type exercises). Iβm hoping that I can start doing some of the rest of them this weekend. I have my own personal coach.
One of my biggest challenges is that my leg muscles are really, really stiff. Like, I can hardly bend my left knee at all. So I know Iβm really going to need to start working on stretching. My doctor told me that starting right when I got home from surgery, I needed to practice bending my leg and well, I didnβt really do thatβ¦ because it hurt! So now Iβm suffering the consequences. But at least each day is getting a little better.
Overall thoughts on recovery: So far, things have gone exactly how my doctor explained they would go. Funny how that works I went into this procedure hoping I would have a swift recovery and be back on my feet in no time, but Iβm realizing now that it has been 1 week that Iβm going to need to be patient and give my body a little of time to heal properly.
My knee surgery did not quite go as expected, so for that I have been pretty disappointed. I donβt want to sound dramatic before I have a chance to talk about everything with my doctor, so I plan to wait and touch on that more next week after my post-op follow-up.
I realize there is no point in being upset over things beyond my control, so for now Iβm just trying to follow my post-op instructions and do my leg exercises so that I can continue to move forward in healing.
Thanks for following along on my road to recovery! I plan on posting another update next Friday. Have a good weekend! <3
You are taking it like a champ. And girl, you make crutches look gooooooooood
Yessss, I try to make crutches look at good as possible.
My sister actually just had a similar knee surgery! She was hooked up to an ice machine 24/7, too. I’ll have to tell her about your posts so she can compare notes :) Best wishes for a speedy, pain free recovery!
Thank you! I hope your sister has a good recovery as well :) I didn’t get an ice machine and I’m definitely regretting it now.
I am going for knee plica tomorrow for right knee than A few months I will do the left knee plica as well thank for you support
You are giving me flashbacks from when I had hip surgery 4 years ago! I remember as soon as I cut back on the pain meds things started to hurt. But the healing will go be faster than you expect! I remember my dr. said I could ride a stationary bike 2 days post surgery- so I did! It definitively helped to stay a little bit active because otherwise I would have gone crazy just laying around all day! Sorry that you got some not-so-good news, but I am glad you are on the road to recovery!
I do feel like I’m going a little crazy right now. I went to Fresh Market tonight and rode around in a wheel chair because I am bored out of my mind. I’m glad to hear healing will go faster than I’m expecting because I’m ready to be back on my feet!
Hope you feel better soon, sending some positive vibes your way, from Alabama!

Thanks :)
I canβt believe you were able to bear weight on your knee right after the surgery! Your recovery process is pretty amazing and itβs impressive that you have done as much as you have. Your knee was definitely more swollen after the Baskin Robbins trip, but worth it Iβm sure. ;) After one week you are already making huge progress. Congrats!
Iβm sorry to hear that not all went well with your surgery. Keep us all posted. I hope itβs nothing serious and that you can still recover and get back to normal.
Thanks, Kristen! My procedure did not have anything to do with the structure of my knee so that’s why I have been able to bear weight. I was a little too quick to hit publish on this post because things have really gone downhill since then, but my follow-up got moved up to tomorrow so hopefully I will get back on track after that! I’m planning on getting a new pair of running shoes to celebrate when it’s time for me to start PT. Maybe I should go for those yellow Brooks you posted? They seemed nice and cheery.
My daughter might have to have this procedure. It looks like you are 2 years out. How long did it take for you to regain full strength if you ever did? Iβve been reading some not so pleasant things about this.
Hi Randy- not sure if you read through all of my recaps but my doctor did not find any plica when he went into my knee. Therefore, my surgery just ended up being a plain knee scope without any surgical intervention. My recovery was a bit rough at first. I did regular recovery PT and was still having the same knee issues as before my surgery. Then I had dry needling and a more intense PT and my knee issues resolved. I think all of my issues were coming from weakness in my left leg. Hope that helps!
i too just had plica surgery one week ago and am having same pain/problem as before surgery. dr did find plica but I still have persistent burning pain. were your original symptoms burning pre surgery?
Hey Sam, I’m a runner too and have just been diagnosed with a meniscus tear left knee and plica syndrom right knee. Dr wants to do both knees at same time. I’m thinking not. Left knee is pain free but still weak. Right knee hurts. I love running and am hoping to get back to at least 20 miles a week. Right now walking is hard.
What are your thoughts on surgery recovery 3 years later? If they just did scope, was anything address or removed from your knee?
Thanks for commenting!
Hi! So they actually didn’t find anything wrong with my knee in the scope so nothing was removed. It’s hard to compare recoveries because my ortho said I should not have any chance of a complication since nothing was actually done. I ended up doing really well with dry needling and extensive PT. I can’t really give input on one knee vs. two knees although my doc did say even when he thought I had a plica that recovery wouldn’t be too bad. It may be worth it to just knock it out if your doctor is suggesting that. Good luck! I know how much it sucks to have knee issues so I’ll be thinking about you <3
Thanks so much! I appreciate the info! Glad to hear you faired well.
