Well, I survived my first PT appointment yesterday! My knee is extra sore and swollen since doing a bit too much this weekend but the therapist said overall that my range of motion and muscle strength is really not bad considering I just had surgery 2.5 weeks ago.
The worst thing Iโm dealing with right now (that I mentioned in my last update) is the stiffness in my leg and knee. The first thing I did at my appointment was sit on the stationary bike and pedal back and forth to try to loosen up those muscles. At first I could hardly pedal but after going back and forth for about 10 minutes, I was able to make a full rotation.
I was expecting the appointment to be kind of like torture but the only part that ended up being bad was when she massaged my incision sites and moved my kneecap around. My knee is so sensitive to the touch right now, but she said she was breaking up any scar tissue and preventing adhesions from forming under my kneecap.
So there were some not-too-pleasant parts but overall I had a good visit. After being inactive for a while, it is nice to have something physical to work on where I can push myself a little bit. I have a new set of exercises to do and Iโm really going to focus on icing this week to try to get some of this swelling to go down.
Iโll be doing 8 weeks of PT with 2 visits per week, so if things go well then I will be finishing up mid-May. I was just thinking about how awesome that would be if I could get somewhat back to normal by then to be able to enjoy outdoor activities again.
New Kicks
To celebrate the first day of spring and starting PT, I went to the local running store on Friday and got a new pair of tennis shoes. My old running shoes have since become my work shoes so I was thinking that I should probably get a second pair anyway. Iโm obviously not going to be running anytime soon but I just wanted something bright and fun as I started PT and began increasing my activity.
I tried on some Mizunos, Brooks and Asics and ended up going with the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11. I have been a Brooks Adrenaline girl for the past 10 years but when I tried on the Mizunos, I knew they were the shoe I wanted to get. My feet just felt so good in them. Plus the sales associate was wearing them and he definitely sold them!
I tried them on in white and when I decided to go with them, the sales associate told me they came in pink. That pretty much sealed the deal.
So here I am with my new kicks, the sun is shining and I had a good PT appointment. Life and recovery are moving along pretty well and I canโt complain about much! Stay tuned for a Week 3 update on Friday. Have a nice day!
I’m sure you are going to be feeling it today too! but at least you have some pretty shoes to keep you company :D
Haha, I am definitely feeling it today.
Nice shoes! The wave inspires are my all time favourite shoe so I hope you love them too.
I hope I love them, too! The guy in the store spoke very highly of them.
I love when running shoes fit perfectly AND they end up being cute! I’ve had a few too many pairs that were the best kind for my feet, but not very cute ha.
Me too! And I hate to be the person who asks about the colors, because I know the people in the running store get annoyed by that :)
Ugh, i wish I could wear Mizuno, they’re so dang pretty!
I shuddered when you metioned breaking up scar tissue. I’ve had that done when I broke my elbow and it’s absolutely awful.
Yeahhhh, it hurt!! I was trying not to seem like a wuss but the surgical sites are really tender and my knee is still pretty sore. I can’t imagine what the look on my face was like when she was doing it, haha.
Glad to hear that your first appointment went well! My husband is a PT :)
I love the color of those shoes!!
Oh really?! Maybe he can help me out because everything that happened with my surgery was very discouraging. 7+ months of knee pain and there was nothing found in my knee scope? Hopefully (more) PT can help.
