Hey guys. How is your weekend going so far? I don’t normally post on the weekend but I just wanted to check in after take a few days off from my regular blogging schedule. I posted earlier this week about the events that happened in my hometown. I went to write Friday’s blog post and simultaneously watched an interview with one of the victim’s parents… just couldn’t bring myself to sit down and chat about random things after that.
Now I’m just sitting here on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee thinking about life. Anytime one of these shooting happens, I’m immediately brought back to the shooting at Virginia Tech. Listening to Alison Parker’s dad talk about how he is going to spend the rest of his life trying to prevent something like this from happening again brought me right back to watching VT victims’ family members saying something similar after the VT shooting. Yet here we are 8 years later, and nothing has changed. It makes me sad and angry. But at the same time, I have done nothing myself to help change it so maybe I am just a hypocrite.
Sorry to get into heavy thoughts on a Saturday morning.
On a lighter note…
Weekly Happenings
Let’s catch up on a few things from last week. Beamer stayed with us over the week while his dad was at the beach.
Beamer and Lily are polar opposites. Lily can be a little furry stalker but she mostly likes to be independent. But Beamer wants to be with you all. the. time. In your lap. In the bed. Standing on the edge of the bathtub supervising your bubble bath. It was nice to have a little snuggle buddy for the week!
Food
So I completely fell off the bandwagon with my eats this week. It was bad. Really bad. I’m only mentioning it because I know I’m a dietitian but I’m not perfect when it comes to my diet. Just like everyone else, I sometimes struggle to find a balance between healthy eating and convenience when I’m juggling a lot of things at once.
Getting back on track this week.
Foot
I’ve mentioned this a few weeks ago, but I tweaked my foot when I was hiking the rock quarry trail at Morrow Mountain State Park. Nothing crazy happened, but I just got a soreness during the hike that has lasted 6 weeks now. I’m sure that being on me feet all day at work and trying to increase my physical activity has not helped the matter.
I’ve not had any swelling or bruising and there has never been an acute pain. I thought about getting it x-rayed but I’m honestly not having symptoms that would indicate a stress fracture. My PT took a look at it one last time yesterday. He already checked it out twice when I was doing knee rehab with him and as before, we both agreed we think it’s just tissue/muscle related stuff going on.
This is what ended up happening:
So if I ever thought dry needling my knee was bad, that was nothing compared to my foot. And that is with smaller needles and no TENS unit.
The verdict? My foot already feels so much better today. It is kind of amazing to me how I have spent periods of time resting, icing, and taking NSAIDs with little improvement, but you can pop a few needles in there for 10 minutes and it makes things better. Blows my mind. (P.S. I have a more comprehensive post about my experience with dry needling here).
Weekend
I’ve got a somewhat busy / fun weekend planned with a hair appointment, shopping and meeting up with friends. So I better hop off of here.
What are you up to this weekend?
Has anyone else tried dry needling?
Totally understand falling off the healthy eating wagon. I tend to fall off the exercise wagon this time of year. Perfect is boring anyways ;)
I’m glad your foot feels better!! Having a hurt foot had inconvenient.
My weekend is lots of school organizing and grocery shopping. I had a great lunch at Just Fresh today, have you been there yet? So good!!
I have not. Where is that? I ate at Tupelo Honey today!
Woah, I’ve never tried dry needling or acupuncture! That’s crazy that it made such a big difference in such a short amount of time. I’ve started to think that there really is something to natural medicine and I want to learn more about it.
I honestly still don’t really understand how it works but between my knee and my foot, I can definitely say that it decreased pain for me. Wayyyy back when I scheduled my surgery, my PT at that time offered to try dry needling on me and I declined. I wish I had taken him on it then!
Dry needling hurts so very bad, but it does help! I’ve had it on my calf multiple times. Each time I’ve felt like someone ripped my calf muscle apart.
Ohhh, I can only imagine. The worst needle was the one that went into the inside of my knee, but overall I would say my foot hurt a lot worse than my knee.
Ahh! I’m not going to be able to read the dry needling post. Just looking at the picture in this post is making me uneasy! I can’t imagine having that many needles in me all at once. Having one in the bottom of the foot must have been awful, but at least you are feeling better now!
LOL, well the needles are really small and honestly most of them don’t hurt. But some of them randomly do, and it’s the anxiety of not knowing how it’s going to feel that gets to me!!!
