Hey guys! Happy Friday. How has your week been? Mine has been kind of tiresome getting used to being in this boot. I don’t think it would be so bad if my left leg wasn’t so weak from having surgery in March. Is this what turning 30 is like? #jesustakethewheel
Vet
Yesterday, I made an impromptu trip into the city to take this girl to the vet.
She has been having a tummy issue since Saturday and I thought maybe it was time to get her checked out. She had some lab work sent away but other than that, they couldn’t find anything going on. Hopefully everything comes back normal!
I found out that my previous vet has recently opened his own practice. He was my favorite vet where we used to go, so I gladly followed him! If you are looking for a vet in the North Charlotte / Huntersville area then feel free to shoot me an email. I would be glad to send you his info.
Vlog Update
I realized when I started filming a bunch of vlogs that my DSLR doesn’t have autofocus. So I have a bunch of awesome videos that are out of focus. Go me And so now I’m trying to decide if I want to upgrade DSLRs or just get a smaller point-and-shoot camera. If you have any advice on the topic then I’d love to hear your thoughts! I currently have a Nikon D90.
Nutrition in the News
A few articles that have caught my attention this week!
Kids consume 12% of their calories from fast food, study shows

^^^ This article made me so sad, but I’m not surprised. Parents would bring fast food to kids in the cafeteria all the time when I was a school dietitian. I don’t want to villianize food or come across as the food nazi, but I just think fast food should be a “once in a while” food for everyone… especially kids.

Vitamin D supplements: Panacea, placebo or something in between?

^^^ This is super interesting to me because I have a Vitamin D deficiency. My doctor and I have had this discussion many times, but I ultimately feel like I will supplement until it’s been proven that it’s not useful.
Drinking diet beverages? You’re probably making terrible food choices.

^^^ I am completely fascinated with diet soda and its health effects.

Any thoughts on any of these??
Have a good weekend!!! <3
Oh, wait until you turn 35! A lot of bizarre things start to happen. So sorry to hear about the boot. I’ve been in an out of one for two years. They suck! You may want to ask the doc about getting some inserts.
That is funny that you mention inserts because my doctor brought it up to me at my appointment. I actually already use the power step inserts from a local running store. He told me that they may not be good enough, and asked me to bring in all of my tennis shoes as well as my inserts to the next appointment. Do you like a specific kind?
Mine are super feet. They’re $50 a pair, but worth it. They work well although I have considered getting real inserts with the number of problems I’ve had. I also rotate my shoes throughout the week so I’m never wearing the same running shoes. My doctor told me to buy different brands to keep my feet from settling into one style/brand.
Gotcha. Thanks for the info! I have Mizuno and and Brooks. I wore my Mizunos to my appointment and my doctor told me the insoles in them were not good enough :/ so I guess I will be looking into other options when the boot is gone.
These are great articles! Before I left the hospital a couple weeks ago, one of the nurses had recommended that I start taking Vitamin D3. Do you know anything about this particular vitamin?
Hi Kristen! Hope everything is going well with the new baby :) Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium and other vitamins. It’s very hard to get in food. We mostly get our Vit D from the sun. I’m honestly not too sure about supplementation as it’s related to perinatal nutrition and whether this was recommended to you for your own health or for your baby’s thru breast milk. I have read before that breast milk alone does not provide enough vitamin D to the baby and supplementation is recommended, but I don’t know if that is still the latest rec. In general, I think a lot of the info about the proven health benefits of taking Vit D is kind of wishy washy… but it’s the kind of thing where it’s not going to hurt you so you might as well. I will say that recently there was some info released that store-brand supplement products from Walmart, Target and Walgreen’s did not actually contain the ingredients they were claiming, and since then I will only purchase name-brand vitamins. The findings were related to herbal supplements but I still thought it was fishy. I actually had been using Target brand Vit D3 for a year and my levels were still low, and now I wonder how much of what I was taking was actually D3.
I saved that diet soda article for future reading. It’s crazy how much conflicting articles there are about whether or not diet soda is detrimental. I just feel so skeptical – how can something like that NOT have an effect on our bodies?
I’m actually not much of a hater of diet soda in comparison to all of the other things we put into our bodies. We are naturally made to detox things. I kind of wonder how much worse diet soda is compared to the tons of meds people take these days in terms of kidney/liver health in the long run.
