Hey there! Happy Friday!
Status currently? Laying in bed with my laptop. Contemplating making a cup of coffee and eggs. Or going to Dunkin’ Donuts. Whatever works! Lily hates walking in the rain, so her newest hobby is refusing to go out at night and then waking me up really early to go for a walk. We are supposed to get a lot more rain out here on the east coast so things are not looking good for my sleep. At least she’s cute.
Dentist
Yesterday was a monumental day because I went to the dentist for the first time in over 4.5 years. I had a horrible experience at the dentist as a child (I had to get a cavity filled and I could feel the drill the entire time!) and this has scarred me for life. As an adult, I have a hard time making dentist appointments and go for long periods of time without going.
The dentist was super nice and wasn’t too hard on me for my poor dentist habits. He did talk to me about how if I’m really scared of the dentist, it’s important to come every 6 months and take extra good care of my teeth so that I can avoid major dental procedures.
I have been having a pain in one of my teeth for a bit and it has been getting worse and worse, which is what prompted me to make this dentist appointment in the first place. If you want to know how bad my dental anxiety is, I actually started having this pain in February and have had making a dentist appointment on my to-do list since then. Yep, for the past 8 months. Awesome. Turns out something funky is going on with my filling in that tooth and it needs to be replaced. But he warned me that he wouldn’t know the extent of what was going on with it until he works on it, and that I might need a root canal! #jesustakethewheel
We talked about my dental anxiety and he is going to prescribe some valium for me to take. I’ve never had valium before but I will take what I can get.
Nutrition in the News
Here are some things that have come across my inbox recently
Time to take Prediabetes seriously: This is something I am passionate about because diabetes is tied to so many other health issues and chronic diseases. Prediabetes is diagnosed with a fasting blood sugar between 100-125 mg/dl or an A1C of 5.7-6.4 (an A1C is a 3-month average of your blood sugars). Taking a diagnosis of prediabetes seriously is SO important, because a lot of blood sugar control at this point can be achieved with weight loss, changes in diet and exercise. From my experience in clinical work, it’s not uncommon for people to ignore a prediabetes diagnosis because they are not at the point where they have to take medicine.
Study links obesity to thyroid cancer risk
Overweight health bloggers perceived as less reliable: this study from Cornell was interesting to me, not because of what it found but actually because of the flip side of the study. I think if someone appears to be very physically fit or has had an extreme amount of weight loss, readers are more likely to view them as a credible source of healthy and nutrition information.
Study finds that calcium from supplements and dairy doesn’t strengthen bones: This is another topic I follow because I have super low Vitamin D and always wonder what the long-term effects of this will be (vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium). I take a Rx Vit D and have had an ongoing conversation with my doctor of whether this is helpful and/or harmful. This study is talking about calcium, too much of which can actually have an adverse effect on your health. This is why I always advise people to have a convo with your doctor about whether you should take a multivitamin and what you should look for in them.
That’s it for today!
I’d love to know your thoughts on these articles.
Anyone else have an extreme fear of the dentist? Or taken Valium for dental procedures?
What do you have going on this weekend? I’m working, so I’m planning on enjoying my Friday off!!!
Way to face your fear and go back to the dentist. A painful tooth can be highly motivating. I try to avoid the dentist more because of the $$$ than the procedures and pain. Every trip to the dentist always results in a dent in my checkbook. I took Valium a couple times when I had to have my wisdom teeth pulled and get an implant. It really helped me to relax – but make sure you have someone drive you. ☺
Today my hubby and I are headed to the pumpkin patch with Axel. This weekend I have a friend coming into town to visit and see Axel. Looking forward to football too! Have a great weekend and stay dry!
Yeahhhh I think the dentist is going to put a nice dent in my wallet this time :( oh well, I did it to myself. Hope you guys had fun at the pumpkin patch!
