Hi friends! Happy Friday! This has not been the best week for meโฆ I had a bit of a mental breakdown over my foot and things kind of went down hill from there. I was having a hard time going grocery shopping with the use of only 1 leg. And then my car died. Good times. Thankfully I have many awesome friends and coworkers who helped me and pulled me out of my slump. I am so thankful to have wonderful people in my life!

Congrats to the winners of my fitbook giveaway: Jillian, Kathryn and Adella! All 3 winners have been contacted and I hope they enjoy their fitbooks as much as I enjoyed mine!
Blog Fixes
Thank you SO much to everyone who let me know about how my links were not working properly on my Becoming an RD page. I spent some time last night fixing everything and I *think* it is all working now. Let me know if you come across anything funny
Nutrition in the News
Here are a few things I found interesting from this week.
Studies about putting calories on menus: this is just talking about how people donโt choose low-calorie options even when calories are posted on the menu, but that restaurants might be encouraged to provide lower-calorie options. I typically try to eat really well at home so that I can choose whatever I want when I go out to eat. I donโt really try to go for the healthiest option. But I like that restaurants are encouraged to make lower-calorie options.
Sweetened drinks may raise risk for heart failure: What I thought was interesting about this study is that they did not distinguish whether to drinks were sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners. Iโm obsessed with reading studies about diet sodas right now so that caught my eye. I just have to question though how the association with heart failure is tied to sweetened beverages vs. other diet and lifestyle factors. For example, is someone who drinks 2+ sweetened beverages per day more likely to be sedentary or have a poor diet?
Red meats and moderation: So last week, the WHO released a powerful message about red/processed meats and how they are awful for you. But now that the dust has settled, we can really take a step back and look at moderation. Basically, donโt eat hot dogs and bacon every single day. Once in a while is not as bad.
What has been going on with you this week?
Do you pay attention to calories on menus? Iโm much more concerned with saturated fat and sodium, especially when it comes to fast food.
Have you ever been a slump due to your circumstances and if so, how did you pull yourself out of it?
Have a great weekend!
I love how you talk about nutrition articles in the news! I just found your blog and will be coming back more often. I’m sooo close to earning my MPH and becoming an RD so I was very interested in all of those studies; particularly the restaurant one. It’s alot of time and money for these restaurants to comply, and it seems like it hasn’t made much of a difference for many consumers. I hope that changes, and people start becoming more aware. Maybe once its commonplace and consumers will expect calorie/nutrition information to be present, they will know where to look.
PS, I’m sad I missed that Fitbook giveaway ;)
Hi Sam! Oh man, the car and the injury? No good! But keep your head up and all will be well soon. I must say that I do like it when a “normal” daily eating restaurant has calories counts — like Panera or something. But nice restaurants, I do NOT want to know. I’m there to eat the good stuff. Does that make sense? Oh and the occasional steak is also something I have been getting into these days. Hope you have a good weekend, lady!
I completely agree with you about the day-to-day eating out :) gotta keep things in check.
What? I didn’t win? Guess I’ll have to buy the Fit Book :)
Friends are the best remedy for a slump.
Sorry, Jill!!! I do think you would love the fitbook :)
