Many of the clients I work with are so afraid of eating the 'wrong' thing during their average day-to-day meals that they are overly restrictive with their diet. 🥦 🍎 Once they allow themselves to have that ice cold beer or handful of potato chips, all bets are off. 💔

It's not uncommon that holidays are filled with binge drinking and uncontrollable eating to the point of discomfort. 🍻

Then after the holiday weekend is over, these thoughts start to creep back in:

🤦🏻‍♀️ "Why did I eat like that?"

🧁 "I'm so disappointed in myself."

🥗 "Now I have to be even more disciplined!"

You don't have to end each holiday weekend feeling ashamed of how you ate or wishing you had more "willpower".

We do not know what causes PCOS. We are seeing a genetic link. We also think there's a link with environmental endocrine disruptors. And there's even a school of thought that maybe PCOS is somewhat like an autoimmune disorder, although more research is needed here.

I have been getting a lot of DMs lately from people asking for clarification about whether they have PCOS, so I thought this would be a good refresher.

The Rotterdam criteria is used to diagnose PCOS. You must meet at least 2 of the 3:

1️⃣ Irregular or missing cycles
2️⃣ Elevated androgens
3️⃣ Polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound

A few important things about this:

➡️ Testing androgens can be difficult sometimes, which is why symptoms alone (primarily hirsutism and hair loss) can be used to diagnosed PCOS.

➡️ The types of cysts that burst are not part of the diagnostic criteria (or part of PCOS).

➡️ If there are NO indications of elevated androgens from signs or symptoms or labs, then it's recommended to fully rule out other conditions that can cause missing cycles, especially hypothalamic amenorrhea.
