Hey guys! Thanks so much for your kind words and well wishes on our engagement. I’m so excited!
The next 3 blog posts starting today will be recaps of our trip to Greece. I love documenting these types of things here and the blog, and maybe they will be useful to someone who is planning a trip in the future.
When B and I first met, one thing we had in common is that we both like to travel. We made a wish list last year of our international travel destinations, and Greece was at the top of both of our lists. B had a huge project due July 1 and we knew I would be quitting my job around that time, so the beginning of July seemed like the perfect time to plan a trip. One of his good couple friends was also planning on going to Greece over the summer, so it worked out well to overlap our trips!
We left for Greece on the evening of July 1 and we arrived to Mykonos after a full day of traveling- 8 hour flight to London, 4 more hours to Athens, and then a short flight to Mykonos (that got delayed twice, womp womp). We didn’t get to Mykonos until 1am and went to bed shortly thereafter.
Mykonos is known as being the party island of Greece. The beaches and water are so beautiful, and there are a ton of beachy restaurants that sit on the water. Here is a view of the water from our hotel:
We stayed at Mykonos Grand Hotel and Resort. We waited a bit too long to book hotels and didn’t have any options by the time we looked, and then our friends just ended up booking this one for all of us- but it was SO amazing! The hotel was modern but still with a Greek feel.
Once our friends arrived the next day, we took our hotel’s recommendation and took a taxi over to a restaurant in Caprice that sits out on the beach. There were lots of beach goers, and we enjoyed some cocktails by the water. We noticed a few things immediately about restaurants… everyone is very chill. In the US, servers are trying to settle up with you right when you finish eating. In Greece, they pretty much leave you alone and let you hang out with your guests until you’re ready to pay.
After lunch, we walked around town for a little bit and then hung out together before heading to Little Venice. Little Venice is the “town” area where all of the little shops are. We grabbed a drink at one restaurant and watched the sunset, and then we ate dinner.
On our second day in Mykonos, we started out the day by relaxing by the pool for a little bit. We tried to go down to the beach but it was so windy that sand was getting in our eyes. The pool was nice, though, and the wind was great in the heat.
There was a girl in a string bikini modeling on this ledge, and literally asked 2 different hotel employees to take her photo on 2 separate occasions. B and I tried to recreate the photo after she left:
I personally think we’re model material, no?
At our hotel’s recommendation, we had lunch at a place called Jackie O’s and then hung out at their pool side bar. The vibe was chill yet upbeat and the food was great! This was my favorite place we went to. I could have stayed there all night.
That evening we went to a place called Scorpio’s. I’m not even sure how to describe it… it was all outdoors and kind of rustic, but there were a lot of young and beautiful people there. We noticed lots of purchases of Cristal. They were having a big party that night, so we decided to have dinner there and then stay to check it out. Since people come to Mykonos to party, I think it we definitely experienced the culture by going there
Food in Mykonos
We ate at the hotel’s buffet breakfast each morning, which was AMAZING! The food was so fresh. I also love fruit in the morning and there were so many options.
Overall, we were surprised to find that most of the restaurants we went to mostly offered upscale seafood meals. We were dying to stop at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant to get an gyro, especially around lunch time, but we didn’t find that in Mykonos. Everything was fantastic, but we were just surprised. Here are some of my meals:
The average price range of everywhere we ate was ~20-30 euros per meal.
Overall Thoughts of Mykonos
I really loved staying at the Mykonos Grand Hotel. It was an excellent way to start the trip. It is a resort so there is a great pool area and they were very accommodating with helping us arrange transportation and giving us recommendations for things to do. The views were absolutely amazing.
Mykonos in general is a huge party town and that is the vibe of every single place we went (except the resort). We are glad we got to experience it but it honestly was not our scene. I think 2 days was the perfect amount to explore and experience things. It’s definitely a must-see destination if you’ve never been to Greece!
